Maintenance and Repairs

Maintenance and operations (M&O) staff keep our buildings, infrastructure and equipment in good repair, inspected and certified. The M&O staff include skilled tradespeople covering a wide area of specialized expertise. They provide a mix of on-demand and planned service. 

On-demand services include responding to all maintenance work requests submitted to the Facilities Help Desk through the  (google form) General Service Request (external link)  form. 

Common maintenance and repair work requests include:

  • Door off hinges, broken door jam, door not closing properly
  • Installation or repair of electrical outlets or fixtures
  • Installation of shelving or hooks; hang a painting
  • Keys, locks and locksmith services
  • Lightbulb replacement and light fixture repairs
  • Painting walls and ceilings
  • Repairs to permanent furniture (lab benches, countertops) or cabinetry
  • Repairs to walls, windows, floors, ceilings
  • Elevator or other equipment malfunctions

Oversight for all repairs and renovation

It is essential for our infrastructure security and our community’s health and safety that maintenance, repairs and renovation work is to be authorized and completed only under Facilities’ oversight. Our building systems and connections to public utilities are complex — third-party contractors or do-it-yourself projects that drill into walls or ceilings could have severe, unintended consequences.

If you need assistance with your space, furniture, fixtures or infrastructure within it, submit a  (google form) General Service Request (external link)  form or contact the Facilities Help Desk for additional guidance. 

Funding responsibilities for maintenance and safety compliance

Base funding is allocated by the university directly to Facilities for base-building repairs, preventative maintenance and infrastructure renewal in general-use facilities and non-specialized academic/research spaces (classrooms and lecture halls, library spaces, informal learning/study spaces).

Departmental, research and revenue-generating business units are responsible for funding the maintenance and safety certification related to specialized equipment and systems.
