Annual fire-safety system testing on Toronto campus begins this week
Facilities Management and Development (“Facilities”) is overseeing the testing of fire-safety system devices in all TMU-managed buildings across the Toronto campus. During the tests, the audible signals (alarm bells) and the visual signals (flashing emergency strobes) will be activated for brief periods intermittently.
The testing will take place overnight after building operational hours in non-residential buildings. The work will take place over the winter break during daytime hours in residences.
The work will be conducted building by building and will begin after Monday, September 29 until Friday, February 6.
In addition to the audible and visual signals, ancillary systems such as elevators, sensors and maglocks that hold fire doors open will be tested causing intermittent disruptions.

How this may impact you
Fire-safety contractors will move through the building inspecting audible and visual signal devices, as well as fire suppression and containment systems.
- In non-residential buildings, the audible and signals will be activated after 10 p.m. to minimize the disruption to occupants.
- In residences, the alarms will be activated during the day to reduce the impact to residents and building employees.
Once the audible and visual devices have been tested, they will be silenced and remaining testing will be conducted silently.
If you are in a building while testing is taking place, you may hear brief audible tests intermittently. Doors in corridors may close automatically and the elevators will return to the first floor with doors open.
If you are aware of activities taking place during the testing period, please advise impacted individuals that this alarm-component testing will occur and that they may encounter contractor personnel in the building.
