Tabling

Interested in engaging with the Toronto Metropolitan University community or have a message you’d like to share? As one of the busiest buildings on campus, take advantage of the foot traffic in the SLC by booking a table and connecting with community members!

Read about SLC Tabling FAQ and Guidelines:

Tabling space in the SLC is provided to the Toronto Metropolitan University community as a way to engage with students, build community, raise awareness, fundraise for worthy causes, and enrich campus life.

Tabling is free of charge for:

  • Sanctioned student groups; and
  • Individual students or groups of students conducting coursework or fundraising for a course-related activity.

Tabling spaces are intended for student engagement activities. They are not intended to be used as personal study spaces or for commercial purposes.External organizations, including not-for-profits and charities, are welcome to collaborate with a Toronto Metropolitan University student group to support and strengthen their cause.

However, commercial organizations may not use a Toronto Metropolitan University student group to access tabling or event space. These types of arrangements are not permitted. If a student group is found to have facilitated a booking on behalf of a commercial organization, their tabling and event privileges will be revoked for the remainder of the academic year.

If you represent an external organization and are interested in tabling at the SLC, please contact slchelp@torontomu.ca with details about your proposed activity and to inquire about applicable rates.

Tabling requests must be submitted at least 15 business days before the requested tabling date and no more than one month in advance. Requests submitted with fewer than 15 business days’ notice will not be processed. Business days do not include weekends or holidays.

Groups may book a table up to twice per week, with a maximum of 4 hours per booking.

Please note: Current TMU students must also submit a request through ExploreTMU (exploretmu.torontomu.ca) prior to submitting a booking request through the link below.

Step 2: Select an available time slot and request the booking

Step 3: Fill out the form with your contact information and tabling activity details

Step 4: Confirm your booking information for submission

Please allow at least 2 business days for a response to your submission.

Please ensure that a representative from your group checks in with staff (wearing either Gold or Black uniforms) at the SLC Welcome Desk with a valid TMU OneCard prior to your scheduled tabling time. The OneCard will be held for the duration of your booking and returned when your tabling activity has concluded.

All tabling activities must:

  • Enhance the SLC’s reputation and contribute positively to the campus community.
  • Enhance the academic and overall student experience.
  • Connect with existing campus groups, initiatives, activities, or resources where appropriate.
  • Be welcoming and open to all students and members of the Toronto Metropolitan University community.
  • Be inclusive and accessible by considering and minimizing barriers to participation.
  • Be reserved to designated tables within the reserved tabling spaces (1st floor Amphitheatre or 2nd Floor Bridge)

A tabling booking is considered a no-show if the organizer does not check in with staff (wearing Gold or Black uniforms) at the Welcome Desk prior to their scheduled start time.

If you cannot make it to your tabling, please email slchelp@torontomu.ca to inform SLC staff. Failure to provide at least 24 hours’ notice will result in your booking being automatically cancelled and your group losing tabling booking privileges for 2 weeks.

Tables measure 6 ft x 2 ft. To keep the SLC accessible and welcoming to all community members:

  • All materials brought to your tabling space must fit on the table itself, with the exception of one pull-up banner or signage displayed on an easel.
  • Organizers must remain close to their designated table and keep all surrounding pathways clear.

You are encouraged to engage with students who approach your table from within your designated tabling space. Please do not leave your designated tabling space to call out to or stop students in high-traffic areas. Allowing patrons to approach your table voluntarily helps foster meaningful engagement.

Get patrons to approach your tabling by:

  • Making your table look nice and visually appealing to attract patron engagement.
  • Avoiding overcrowding your table. Ensure your tabling station is accessible and approachable to all.

To minimize disruption to other students and activities in the SLC, music is not permitted during tabling activities. Speakers, audio equipment, or other sound systems are not permitted during tablings.

Social media promotion:

Physical promotion:

  • Stand-alone signage is permitted, including banners and digital displays such as laptop screens.
  • Postering for tablings is not permitted anywhere in the SLC. Unapproved posters will be removed by staff.
  • If you would like to display a poster, you may request an easel to display it on the main floor. Easels can be requested during the booking request process.

Packaged food is preferred for tabling activities.

If you plan to provide unpackaged food, you must:

  • Have a valid Food Handler’s Certificate.
  • Follow proper food-handling practices, including appropriate handwashing, gloves, and hair restraints where required.
  • Provide a visible list of ingredients.
  • Follow all applicable food-safety requirements.

We recommend choosing ready-to-serve foods that do not require heating or refrigeration.

A tabling is designated:

  • One 6ft x 2ft
  • Two chairs

We cannot provide additional tables. Requests for additional chairs on the day of your booking are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.

Please do not take chairs from other spaces of the SLC. These chairs are reserved for student use or other bookings.

You are not permitted to bring your own table and set up in another location of the SLC. All tabling activities must follow the SLC guidelines outlined above, including the use of approved tables in their designated spaces.

You are not permitted to table outside of the SLC’s designated tabling space (1st Floor Amphitheatre or 2nd Floor Bridge).

The ramps and stairways are high-traffic entrances and exits used by thousands of students each day. To ensure safe and accessible passage for everyone, this area must remain barrier-free and unobstructed. The sidewalk space at the front of the stairs leading to the SLC belongs to the City of Toronto. Special permission from the City is required to set-up any type of activity there.

To keep the SLC world-class, postering is not permitted. Unapproved postering will be removed by staff.

Digital signage may be submitted to the campus-wide screen network

All tabling activities are listed on the digital screens above the 1st floor elevators for guests to see.

Please submit a booking request for each tabling date. Each date requires a separate request to ensure accuracy.
