As Director of Graduate Students since the Ted Rogers MBA program’s inception in 2006, Dr. Dale Carl is dedicated to ensuring graduate students obtain the skills and experience needed to launch successful careers upon graduation.
How do you support graduate students to become career-ready?
Each semester, we host an integrative week where MBA students work directly with companies on important issues. It not only gives students real experience with real issues but also exposes employers to our students, whom they then hire for internships and employment.
Case competitions are another tremendous learning experience: working together as a team to solve a problem and presenting in a compelling way in order to sell an idea. Last year, our students entered 16 case competitions and finished on the podium in almost everyone.
What sets TMU graduate students apart from their peers?
The first is creativity and diversity of perspectives because our students come from all walks of life. The second is collegiality, which is built into the DNA of our program, unlike most MBAs which tend to be cut-throat. We are one big family, team players who are really valued by organizations.
What advice do you have for graduating students?
Soft skills are critical. Despite the fact that everything is digital nowadays, you still have to deal with people, understand them and empathize in order to sell your solution.
Also, be true to yourself – that’s what makes life worthwhile.
