3M recall on N95 respirator masks: Please check your mask supply

March 12, 2021

To: Executive Group; Senior administration; RFA Academic Admin; Researchers approved to be on campus and technicians; Individuals who have procured masks via a purchase order or Ryerson Purchasing Card
Cc: Environmental Health and Safety

As your faculty or department may purchase or distribute masks, we would like to inform you of a recent manufacturer’s recall on 3M N95 respirator masks. Purchasing is a decentralized process at Ryerson, and we are sharing this message with you in case you have ordered 3M N95 respirator masks since September 2020.

We ask that you please share this message with those in your area who may have been responsible for mask procurement so that any 3M N95 respirator masks in your area’s possession can be reviewed and verified as safe to use.

How to verify if your masks are safe to use

  1. Visit the “Counterfeit Alerts” section of the 3M Worker Health & Safety website (external link)  and review the PDF documents identifying model numbers and lot codes affected by the recall.
  2. Check the model numbers and lot codes against all 3M N95 respirator mask stock your area holds.
  3. If the model numbers and lot codes in the recall do not match your supply of masks, the masks are safe for continued distribution and use.

If your model number and lot codes are part of the recall

If the model number and lot codes in the recall match your supply of masks, please immediately quarantine the product and discontinue use. You may wish to contact your supplier to discuss mask replacements.

Some masks at Ryerson already confirmed safe

For the mask supply that was centrally procured by Financial Services via the Ministry of Colleges and Universities, we have manually verified the stock to ensure the model numbers and lot codes do not match those affected by the recall. These masks were distributed only to the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing.
