Mental Health for PALS: Pay Attention, Ask, Listen, and Share Supports

Overview

Over the past several years, mental health and wellbeing concerns have been rising for students leading to impacts on academic and personal success. We also know that students often turn to their peers first when they are struggling with their mental health. At TMU, we strive to provide a safe and supportive campus community where students, staff, and faculty can flourish in their personal, professional, and academic pursuits. In this workshop, we will provide information and skills on how to respond to mental health related distress and enhance our community wellbeing through a culture of caring that supports, protects, and promotes wellbeing. The workshop uses the framework of PALS: Pay attention, Ask, Listen and Share Supports to ensure our student community feels prepared to support themselves and others when experiencing mental health concerns.

PALS training combines theory, practice and experiential activities to:

Enhance understanding of the context that influences mental health and wellbeing
Increase awareness of the signs of distress (trauma-informed) in self and others
Improve skills to respectfully engage with individuals in distress
Build confidence to refer individuals to appropriate and timely resources
Deepen understanding the importance of compassionate debriefing process for self preservation

This workshop will create opportunities for participants to gain new information, reflect on their personal experiences, and apply their learnings to relevant scenarios through engaging interactions and discussion.
