Required to Withdraw

Students who have been assigned a Required to Withdraw (RTW) academic standing at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) may:

  • Request to enter in the Fresh Start Program after a one-term suspension period.
  • Be able to apply for Reinstatement between 12 months (three terms) and 24 months (six terms) after the RTW standing was assigned.
  • Apply for readmission (using a TMU Application) after 24 months (six terms) after the RTW standing was assigned. Applications will be considered based on past academic performance, space availability and competition. Students must also apply by the admission deadlines and follow the procedures set by Undergraduate Admissions.

Students may not enrol in any TMU credit courses (including credit courses offered through the Chang School) if they are:

  • Assigned an RTW academic standing for 12 months or less
  • Not yet reinstated
  • Not currently participating in the Fresh Start program

In addition, courses enrolled at another institution will not count towards graduation requirements for a TMU degree program.

Fresh Start Program

Fresh Start is a two-term Student Success program designed to assist students in resuming their undergraduate studies. Students who have been assigned an RTW academic standing might be able to participate in the Fresh Start program after a one-term suspension period. Students may request to enter Fresh Start to continue their studies in their current program or request a transfer to another program.

Please note: Not all programs accept Fresh Start transfers.

Reinstatement

Before proceeding, the reinstatement process is only valid if your RTW standing is be between 12 months (three terms) and 24 months (six terms) after assignment.
To begin, please complete these steps:

  1. Review the Reinstatement participation criteria to ensure Reinstatement is offered and that you meet the eligibility criteria.

  2. Confirm the Fresh Start and Reinstatement Dates to ensure that your application will be accepted.

  3. Complete the  (PDF file) Request for Reinstatement/Fresh Start Form, including the Supplementary Form.

  4. Submit the completed form to your Academic Program Advisor by the application deadline date.

Please note: Reinstatement into your program is considered based on: past academic performance, space availability and competition. It is not guaranteed. You will be contacted by email by a program advisor once your application has been reviewed. The timeframe for application review varies by program. If you have any questions, please contact your Academic Program Advisor.

Students who are approved for reinstatement, will resume their studies on probation. They will be required to sign a Probationary Contract that outlines their courses and recommended support services. 

Successful completion of a Probationary Contract will allow a student to continue on Probation (or Clear standing if a cumulative GPA of 1.67 or higher is achieved).

Students who have been denied reinstatement to their program twice may not reapply for reinstatement to that program. In this case, students will be formally withdrawn from their program of study.

Readmission

If you have been assigned an RTW academic standing and wish to be considered for readmission into your program after 24 months (six terms) have elapsed, please apply for readmission using a TMU Application.

Please note: Applications will be considered based on past academic performance, space availability and competition, as well as admission deadline dates and procedures determined by Undergraduate Admissions. It is not guaranteed.

Transfer to a New Program After RTW

If you have been assigned an RTW academic standing, and you do not wish to return to your program of study after your 12 months (three terms) suspension period, you may wish to discuss transferring to another TMU program with an advisor from Undergraduate Admissions at the ServiceHub.
