Frequently Asked Questions

The Sheldon & Tracy Levy Student Learning Centre (SLC) is a place for the university community to study, collaborate, and invent.

An iconic structure in the heart of Toronto, it is the symbolic “front door” of campus and a world-class learning destination for the university community.

The building is guided by five principles:

  1. Respect the needs of the students.
  2. Maximize the use of the SLC in ways that support the first principle and promotes academic stakeholder activity.
  3. Leverage opportunities for student and university community engagement.
  4. Foster a dynamic environment.
  5. Enhance Toronto Metropolitan University’s reputation.

The Toronto Metropolitan University community is encouraged to use the SLC in ways that support the five principles. On top of studying, university community members can use the SLC for events through tabling opportunities and Amphitheatre bookings.

The SLC is also home to academic stakeholders:

If you’re traveling to the SLC by public transit, there are many stations close by:

TTC (external link)  – The nearest subway stations are College or Dundas station

GO Transit (external link)  – The nearest stop is Union Station. From there it is a 20 minute walk or a 5 minute subway ride to Dundas station.

All SLC entrances are accessible. From Gould Street, there is a ramp at the southeast corner of the building (at O’Keefe Lane).  During operating hours, an elevator is also available to bring guests from street level to the main entrance.

Currently, most of the art has been created by our very own talented student staff. The stairwell art initiative was developed to spread positive messages, and fill an otherwise blank space with something colourful and lively.

Want to have your art featured at the SLC? We accept submissions year-round, giving all university community members a chance to make their mark in our stairwell! All Toronto Metropolitan University artists (students, staff, faculty, and alumni) can submit their work.  Whether through text or art, we want to see what you have to say!

Read our no postering policy here

Digital screens on the first floor (above the elevators) are reserved for SLC stakeholder events, building operations and University messaging.

Try submitting your ad to Toronto Metropolitan University’s network of over 70 screens across campus — one of which is in the Starbucks area of the SLC. Specs and submission guidelines here.

The SLC has wifi available for all Toronto Metropolitan University students, faculty and staff. If you are not a university community member, you can connect to wifi if your home institution participates in eduroam. Before coming to the SLC, configure your wireless eduroam connection, then sign in using the credentials from your home institution.

Yes, every workstation has an outlet! Please remember to stay with your device at all times.

The SLC is BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop)! If you don’t have one with you, there is a Laptop Loan Program in the Library. There are also two printing stations available in the Library on floors 2 and 5.

It’s important to make sure you’re getting enough food and water while you’re studying. So there are water bottle refill stations and water fountains at the entrance of the washrooms on each floor.

If you’re looking for food, the SLC has a couple of options for you:

  • Starbucks on the first floor, across from the Amphitheatre.
  • Basil Box on the ground floor. Access is from outside on Yonge Street only.
  • If you brought food from home, there are microwaves in the Service Hub on the first floor of the Podium building.

If you need a snack, there are vending machines on most floors, each payable by OneCard. Drink vending machines also accept cash. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Floor 2: snacks & stationery
  • Floor 3: snacks & cold beverages
  • Floor 4: snacks & cold beverages
