This opening circle brings Black grad scholars, elder scholars, and prospective mentors into conversation to 'till the soil' of our shared ecosystem. Through small-group dialogues and meet-the-mentor connections, participants will begin mapping their support networks and imagining new pathways for collaboration, in complement with GLI, GTiA, and YSGPS offerings that clarify expectations, milestones, and supports.
Rooted and Rising: Promoting a Sense of Belonging for Emerging Black Scholars is a new series of collaborative workshops, convened by the Black Scholarship Institute (BSI), the Yeates School of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (YSGPS), the Graduate Leadership Institute (GLI), and GRAD Thriving-in-Action (GTiA) to nurture Black graduate and postgraduate scholars, including postdoctoral fellows, across the lifecycle of their studies.
Grounded in Black intellectual traditions, Rooted and Rising enriches the 'nuts and bolts' professional development supports offered through the GTiA, GLI, and YSGPS by pairing them with culturally affirming spaces where Black scholars can root themselves in community, identity, and legacy. Together, these spaces affirm that when our roots are tended, we can face the winds of academic life with greater strength, clarity, and collective support.
Black-identifying TMU graduate students and postdocs from all disciplines are invited to attend!
