First Master of Cybersecurity cohort

Tomorrow’s cybersecurity leaders are off to a strong start at TMU.

The university’s newest interdisciplinary graduate program, the Master of Cybersecurity’s inaugural cohort consists of 30 students from diverse backgrounds ranging from computer science, engineering and IT to political science and theatre.

The one-year, course-based program encompasses not only essential technical knowledge, but also business management and leadership skills. An interdisciplinary approach combines cyber defense and network security with risk management and governance, while industry partnerships with organizations like the Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst prepare graduates to be strategic cybersecurity leaders.

“Employers aren’t just looking for threat analysts—they need professionals who can manage risk, lead teams and align security with business goals,” said Dr. Ali Miri, graduate program director. “With thousands of cybersecurity roles unfilled across Canada and globally, graduates who understand both the tech and the strategy are uniquely positioned to step into high-impact, resilient careers.”

"This program is a critical step in addressing the global talent gap in cybersecurity, which is clearly becoming essential to all sectors."

“It’s truly a privilege to be a part of the first cohort,” said Kornicer. “I believe that this program is a critical step in addressing the global talent gap in cybersecurity, which is a field that is clearly becoming essential to all sectors.”

Meanwhile, Chris Malit came to TMU with a background in theatre, hospitality and IT support for Amazon. He was attracted by the program’s graduate-level education and convenient downtown location. According to Malit, the project-based assignments are helping him develop teamwork skills and stay abreast of trends in the cybersecurity landscape.

“I love cybersecurity in general,” said Malit. “The idea of protecting assets is attractive to me as a career. I’m hoping to leverage what I’m learning to land a role in cybersecurity.”
