GRAD Peer Support

Recognizing the unique pressures faced by graduate students, the Graduate Leadership Institute (GLI) (opens in new window)  and Student Integrated Health and Wellbeing (SHaW) (opens in new window)  have partnered on a unique program program designed to bolster mental health and create a supportive community for graduate students.

This initiative brings together the strengths of student leaders and well-being experts to create opportunities for mental health support and peer connection at TMU. Join to be part of a supportive, inclusive, and empowered graduate community. Your journey to better well-being and leadership starts here!

The winter program will consist of four sessions from January to March, led by graduate students trained in peer support.

Sessions are eligible for the Future Smart (opens in new window)  program. Please see program details below.

WINTER 2026 PEER SESSIONS

  • January 13, 2026 @12:00-1:00 pm – New Year, New Goals
  • February 3, 2026 @12:00-1:00pm – Building Connections and Setting Intentions
  • February 24, 2026 @12:00-1:00pm – Creating Balance
  • March 24, 2026 @12:00-1:00pm – Building Resilience

All peer groups sessions to be held online.

  • Leadership: Graduate student champions will gain valuable leadership experience such as facilitating group discussions and and promoting mental health awareness. Participants in the peer support groups will practice essential leadership skills such as active listening, empathy, and understanding.
  • Community and Connection: Increase your social network and foster a deeper sense of belonging within the graduate community.
  • Well-Being Strategies: Participants will learn improved strategies for managing stress, balancing various aspects of their lives, and achieving mental health and wellbeing.
  • Supportive Network: Contribute to a more resilient and supportive graduate student community.

Our collaborative program pairs GLI’s leadership expertise with SHaW’s wellness resources to offer a dynamic peer support experience. Graduate student champions will lead support groups that serve as safe havens for students to share experiences, build connections, and navigate academic and personal challenges. Unlike counseling or therapy, these groups focus on community-building and mutual support.

The peer support sessions will be held from January to March and will be co-led by graduate student champions. These semi-structured meetings will cover various topics relevant to graduate life. Participation in these sessions is not only a step toward personal growth but also earns Future Smart (opens in new window)  credit, with one credit awarded for attending at least two sessions.
