With Bauder’s appointment, TMU is set to strengthen its connections with German academic institutions, creating new opportunities for students and faculty.

Dr. Harald Bauder, a faculty member in the Department of Geography and the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), has been named the new German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) (external link)  Research Ambassador. Bauder previously served as the Graduate Program Director for Immigration and Settlements Studies and is well-positioned to strengthen academic ties between Canada and Germany.

Bauder’s connection to DAAD began over a decade ago when he received funding as an emerging scholar. “I have been a recipient of DAAD funding myself, and since then, I have cultivated close connections to fellow researchers in Germany and to the German student and research community here in Toronto and Ontario. Eventually, the DAAD approached me to serve as Research Ambassador, which I am delighted to do,” he said.

In his new role, Bauder aims to assist TMU students and researchers in exploring opportunities for study and research in Germany. “I hope to help students and researchers with interests in Germany to identify the resources that enable them to go and study or do research there,” he explained. He also noted that many students and colleagues are unaware of the funding options available through DAAD and other German organizations, adding, “I hope to entice these students and colleagues to consider Germany.”

Bauder emphasized the benefits of DAAD funding for both Canadian and German students, highlighting the enhanced international experience it brings to TMU. “Many students from Germany come to Canada on DAAD funding, which enriches the academic environment of our programs here at TMU,” he noted.

For graduate students and recent postdoctoral researchers interested in conducting research in Germany, Bauder outlined the support offered by DAAD. “The DAAD—and similar organizations like the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation—provide not only funding but also a community and network that offers logistical, administrative, and personal support, including language training if desired,” he said. “Once you are part of this community, you will always be a valued alumni and can benefit from this network throughout your academic career and beyond.”

With Bauder’s appointment, TMU is set to strengthen its connections with German academic institutions, creating new opportunities for students and faculty. His role as DAAD Research Ambassador marks an important step in enhancing TMU’s international partnerships.
