Monica Mckay

Equity and Community Inclusion

Over the past 30+ years, Monica Mckay has dedicated her career to the wellbeing and success of Indigenous students, staff, and faculty at Toronto Metropolitan University. Through her leadership, vision, and deep commitment to community-building, she carries her ancestors and her Nisga’a teachings with her as she weaves a strong web of relationships across campus and beyond, always mindful of the generations of Indigenous students, staff, and faculty still to come. That web continues to transform TMU as we walk on our journey of truth-telling and reconciliation. Monica’s institutional fortitude and enduring impact exemplify this award of excellence.

The Community Building Working Group (CBWG) exemplifies compassion and equity through institutional collaboration. Formed in 2024 in response to the impact on the TMU community from the geopolitical conflict in Israel and Palestine, this group of dedicated front-line staff took on the additional work on the sides of their desks to foster connection, well-being, and healing university-wide. Their impactful initiatives, including sessions dealing with managing grief, creating additional counselling opportunities, education on anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, providing conflict resolution skills training, were centred on learning and bringing the community together.

The launch of the TMU SoM demonstrated outstanding administrative and operational excellence through seamless collaboration between SoM and TMU central teams. Together, they built a new medical school from the ground up, achieving unprecedented accreditation of the MD program and 16 residency programs, and securing affiliation agreements with all major hospital and institutional partners across Brampton and surrounding areas. Operating above capacity, the teams streamlined complex processes, recruited and onboarded over 100 staff and clinical faculty leaders, appointed 500+ clinical faculty, and implemented a new learner management system and facility - showcasing innovation, efficiency, and strategic impact across TMU.
