Microsoft installations required for continued access to virtual applications

April 22, 2022

To: Students who have used virtual applications since the fall 2021 term
Cc: All faculty and contract lecturers

Beginning May 2, 2022, a newly upgraded virtual applications (VApps) environment will be available.

VApps allows students, faculty and contract lecturers to securely access licensed software without having to install the software on your own computer. In the meantime, the current VApps environment will continue to be available until May 1, 2022.

Required software for accessing the new VApps environment

Following the May 2 upgrade, you will need to complete two installations to access VApps, including:

  • Microsoft multi-factor authentication (MFA); and the
  • Microsoft Remote Desktop client.

How to connect to VApps

Once you have Microsoft’s MFA and desktop client installed on your computer, you’ll be ready to connect to VApps. To do so:

  1. Launch the Microsoft Remote Desktop client.
  2. Select Subscribe.
  3. Sign in with your my.ryerson username and password, and a virtual desktop will appear, allowing you to run all software available via VApps.

Please note that when using VApps, you must save your work to cloud storage such as your university-issued Google Drive account.
