Joe Zboralski Teaching and Community Engagement Award

Who can be nominated?

• Any CUPE 3904 Unit 1 or Unit 2 Contract Lecturer with at least 1 seniority credit is eligible.
• Nominations are only valid for the year in which they are submitted and are based on achievements within the past academic year.
• Winners can only win the award one time.
• Unsuccessful nominees can be nominated again in subsequent years, including the immediately following year.

• Nominations may be submitted by any faculty member, contract lecturer or Chang School contract lecturer, staff, or students. 
• Self-nominations are accepted. 
• Note: Student nominators are encouraged to contact the FAC in their Faculty via the Dean's Office to get assistance from a faculty advisor with compiling the full nomination file. This is to ensure that the submission reflects a full range of the nominee's contributions that a student nominator may not be fully aware of.

This award focuses on nominees building capacity for future leadership, evidenced by their significant contribution to inspiring students and colleagues to become involved and engaged in their communities.  And, demonstrated passion about making positive change through the work they do with the internal or external TMU community, internally and/or externally at TMU.  

Commitment to engaged scholarship by offering their expertise in service to the wider community and encouraging civic engagement through academic service learning and community-based learning experiences. 

This can be demonstrated by:

• Integration of meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities;
• Examples of continued, inspired and engaged community involvement;
• Examples of care for CUPE colleagues and/or students with the goal of increasing social responsibility and citizenship;
• Examples of creating or maintaining ongoing collaboration between University and community partners that have a positive social, civic, cultural, or environmental impact; 
• Demonstrated activities with community members and partners for the public good within the local community.

• How does the partnership strive to model TMU’s principles of community engagement
• How are nominees building capacity for future leadership in the field
• How do the activities support and/or inspire change in the community(s)

1. Obtain the nominee’s permission.
2. Complete the nomination package as described below.
3. Submit the nomination package via the Online Nomination Portal on the Recognition Website.
4. Nominees receive a confirmation email with a link to provide online consent before the deadline. This step must be completed before the deadline.

The nomination package includes:

• Citation (100 words maximum) - highlight why the nominee deserves this award and any notable achievements. This citation will be included in related university communications if the nominee is selected. 

• Nomination Brief (two page maximum): 
  • Why the individual is being nominated for the award.
  • Describe the nominee’s achievements and impact as it relates to the award criteria.
  • Provide supporting information that demonstrates achievements (data, specific examples).

• Supporting Statement (2 page maximum): 
  • To be completed by someone other than the nominator or selection panel.

• An updated Curriculum Vitae (CV) - focussing on the nominee’s teaching, engagement in the community, achievement and other contributions.

This award will be adjudicated by a committee with the following members:

• Vice-Provost, Faculty Affairs 
• CUPE Local 3904 Unit 1 VP
• CUPE Local 3904 Unit 2 VP
• CUPE Local 3904 President

Nomination deadline: November 21 at noon: All completed nomination files for the award must be submitted online and the nomination acceptance from the nominee is required.
