Dean's Teaching Award - Contract Lecturers (CUPE 1 and 2) Recipients

The Dean's Teaching Awards – Contract Lecturers recognizes TMU CUPE Unit 1 and CUPE Unit 2 contract lecturers who have demonstrated continuing teaching excellence and achievement in instruction. The awards will be distributed according to the Faculty of the nominee: Faculty of Arts, The Creative School, Faculty of Community Services, Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science, the Ted Rogers School of Management, and the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education.

Award recipient(s) will receive a certificate of recognition and a monetary award of $2,000 as a one-time payment (subject to applicable deductions).

2024 Recipients

Khashayar Bayati

Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science

Khashayar, a dedicated educator at TMU, is nominated for his significant contributions to enhancing the quality of teaching and learning in signal processing. His commitment to student success is evident in the supportive and engaging learning environment he consistently creates. Khashayar's availability and willingness to assist students outside of regular class hours have been met with positive feedback from his learners. His extensive knowledge of signal processing has facilitated a classroom experience that is both comprehensive and interactive. Khashayar's continuous efforts to promote a meaningful and enriched learning experience make him a worthy candidate for the Dean's Teaching Award.

Ciro Fernando Bustillo Lecompte

Faculty of Community Services

Dr. Ciro Bustillo LeCompte is highly deserving of the teaching excellence for the Dean's Teaching Award - Contract Lecturers (CUPE 1 and 2). His commitment to outstanding classroom leadership, innovative teaching, and student engagement aligns with the award's key criteria. Janet Deacon

Faculty of Community Services

With an extensive background spanning over 30 years as a registered dietitian in various healthcare settings and corporate healthy eating programs, along with a remarkable 25 years of teaching experience, Janet blends professional knowledge with her vibrant and positive teaching style. Janet's instructional approach includes hands-on experiential learning in the quantity food and nutrition lab courses, offered both to the undergraduate Food and Nutrition undergraduate students, as well as the Internationally Educated Nutrition Professionals program. Janet's individualized support and mentorship contribute significantly to the growth and success of her students, who she warmly calls 'my future colleagues'.

Imran Kamal

Lincoln Alexander School of Law

Imran's teaching experience at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law includes teaching Children and the Law last year, Legal Research and Writing and Indigenous and Aboriginal Law this year. In being first lecturer of the Children and the Law course at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, Imran was tasked creating a course that was innovative and creative and that covered a broad range of subject areas. Imran's approach ensured that principles of equity, diversity and inclusion were then embedded into the discussion and content of the entire course and ensured the students were empowered in their learning journey.

R. Scott Millward

The Creative School

Scott Milward is a renowned CUPE instructor who is highly praised by his students for his knowledgeable, kind, straightforward, enthusiastic, and passionate teaching style. He is also a proud alumna of the GCM program, and he goes above and beyond his teaching role to share his knowledge and experience with students, faculty members, and CUPE instructors. He does so in an equitable and inclusive manner, which has earned him the reputation of being a true friend and colleague. We thoroughly enjoyed working with him.

John Edward Stowe

Faculty of Arts

A dedicated and enthusiastic educator, Dr. John Edward Stowe has taught at TMU for over 20 years. His vision and perseverance led to the creation of Chinese language and culture programming, including a new course in modern Chinese culture. Dr. Stowe's teaching has inspired students to embrace Chinese as a personal milestone, one that provides fulfillment and stands as an investment in the future. His advocacy for graduates to embark on research journeys to China, encouragement of students to enhance their understanding through community engagement, and mentorship and support of new colleagues demonstrate a commitment that goes above and beyond.

Ian Williams

The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education

Ian Williams excels in teaching Digital Geography and Crime Analytics at The Chang School, leveraging 14 years of experience. His innovative teaching methods include using real-world data and TMU lab technologies, which allow students to create professional portfolios. His commitment to experiential learning ensures students acquire practical skills for their future careers. Ian's focus on instructional best practices and student achievement makes him an exemplary nominee for thisTeaching Excellence Award. His work has consistently demonstrated the creativity and forward-thinking required to prepare students effectively for the dynamic demands of their respective fields.

Ryan Wilock

Ted Rogers School of Management

Ryan Wilock's work as a contract lecturer in the Entrepreneurship and Strategy Department is exemplary in that it inspires students and makes a meaningful difference to their progress towards the Entrepreneurship Major, along with their development as actual entrepreneurs. His innovative approach to classroom teaching is based in listening and understanding students' needs. His willingness to provide support and advice to student entrepreneurs is remarkable. He has also served in a variety of service posts and made important contributions to curriculum development of the core courses in the entrepreneurship program.

Jian Yuan

Faculty of Science

Dr. Jian Yuan has been a contract lecturer of physics at TMU since 2004. She loves teaching and clearly cares about her students and their leaning. Her approach to teaching science is to convey complex concepts with clarity and enthusiasm and make the subject matter not only accessible, but also fascinating to the students. Her teaching philosophy is student-centered: engaging students, emphasizing active learning, and focusing on conceptual understanding and problem solving. The learning environment Jian creates is nurturing, engaging, yet challenging. She is inspiring not only for her students, but for her colleagues as well.
