Update Apple devices running macOS 13 (Ventura) to retain access to the TMU network
To: All faculty and staff
On September 15, 2025, macOS 13 (Ventura) reached its “end of life” and Apple is no longer providing software updates, security patches or technical assistance for macOS 13 devices.
Continuing to use a macOS 13 device means that over time, your computer and any data or accounts you access with it will become more vulnerable to malware and other online attacks.
Please note this email only applies to those using Apple computers running the macOS 13 (Ventura) operating system.
What can you do?
We strongly recommend moving to the macOS 26 (Tahoe), macOS 15 (Sequoia) or macOS 14 (Sonoma) operating systems, which are free-of-charge for all who currently use a licensed version of macOS 13.
Note this recommendation applies to both TMU-issued devices and any personal computers you may be using to access your TMU resources and accounts.
How to check if your computer can support a recommended Apple operating system
First, determine the make and model of your Apple device, as well as the operating system you’re currently running. To do this:
- Click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen and select About This Mac.
- A new window will pop-up displaying this information.
Next, verify if your Apple device will support the three latest macOS operating systems. To do so, please consult the following pages on the Apple website:
- macOS Tahoe is compatible with these computers (external link, opens in new window)
- macOS Sequoia is compatible with these computers (external link, opens in new window)
- macOS Sonoma is compatible with these computers (external link, opens in new window)
How to upgrade your Apple operating system
You’ll need to upgrade your device’s operating system to keep it secure and to be able to connect to the TMU network after December 18, 2025. The following instructions apply only to Computing and Communications Services (CCS)-supported devices with a CCS asset tag. For devices not supported by CCS, kindly confirm the process with your school or department’s IT support team.
Things to note before you begin
- It will take 45 minutes to two hours to download and another 30-60 minutes to perform the update.
- You can still use your computer during the download period.
Starting your download
- Click the Apple logo in the upper-left corner of your screen
- Select System Settings or System Preferences, depending on your existing operating system
- If you selected System Settings, select General and then Software Update
- If you selected System Preferences, select Software Update
- If a new operating system update is available for your device, you will see a button prompting you to install the latest version
If your computer cannot support a recommended Apple operating system, it will be blocked from accessing TMU’s VPN connection
If your TMU-issued computer is unable to support macOS 26 (Tahoe), macOS 15 (Sequoia) or macOS 14 (Sonoma), it is deemed a security risk to TMU and your computer will be blocked from accessing the TMU-VPN as of December 18, 2025. Without VPN, your computer will be unable to connect to resources on TMU’s network.
As next steps, please discuss the process of obtaining a macOS 26 (Tahoe), macOS 15 (Sequoia) or macOS 14 (Sonoma)-supported device with your dean or manager.
