Admission Requirements

  • Four-year honours Bachelor's degree, or equivalent
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 / 4.33 (B), or equivalent, in the final half of the program

A portfolio containing journalistic work is strongly recommended, see Portfolio section below for more details.  

All applicants (including those who have completed a degree internationally or at a French-speaking institution) will be required to provide certification of English language proficiency through one of the accepted examinations listed in the YSGS admissions website (opens in new window)  unless:

  • they have completed two or more years of full-time postsecondary education at a Canadian university.
  • they have completed two or more years of full-time postsecondary education  at a university at which English was the primary language of instruction.
  • they have completed a graduate degree at a university where English was the primary language of instruction.

For exemption from this requirement, applicants are required to provide an official statement from their institution's Registrar's office confirming the use of English as the Medium of Instruction for the duration of their study. This letter will be required to be submitted through the applicant portal once you have applied and have been asked to submit your documents. This applies to all internationally educated applicants, including those that are currently studying within North America.

Please note, meeting the minimum English proficiency requirements does not guarantee admission. Programs may set additional requirements to these minimum standards.

You are required to submit a brief statement (about 500 words in length) that should address the following:

  • your reasons for pursuing graduate study in Journalism;
  • the research interest(s) you may wish to pursue in your major project;
  • how your previous studies and experience have prepared you for the MJ program; and
  • your career objectives and how the MJ program relates to them.

Please submit an updated résumé and highlight how your previous studies and experiences have prepared you for graduate study at Toronto Metropolitan University.

Two Letters of Recommendation are required for each application. The two recommendations should be from academic referees – former professors or research supervisors familiar with your abilities. One recommendation may be substituted with a professional letter from a previous employer.

You will be asked to complete the referee page on the online application form. Please include the contact information of your referees, including an active e-mail address. Your referees will be contacted electronically within 2-3 business days of your application submission with further instructions.


A portfolio is not necessary for admission to the Master of Journalism program but a portfolio containing journalistic work is strongly recommended.

  • Applicants may submit a portfolio of published journalistic work (not fiction, academic or creative writing).
  • Portfolio pieces, including scanned clippings, must be merged into one pdf file.
  • A maximum of six items may be included. 
  • State clearly where and when each was published.
  • If you are including online work, please provide the URL in your pdf portfolio document.
  • We will also consider ONE video or audio item which has previously been broadcast. Applicants are strongly encouraged to use an online posting site for audio/video material.  The URL should be included in the portfolio pdf document. 
  • Important Note: The admissions online portal will only accept one (pdf) portfolio file.


If you are not submitting a portfolio, the online application system will still require you to submit a pdf file under this item type. In this case you may submit a page with the text, "Portfolio not available."
