Self-Defence

Both the series and one-day workshop are open to all TMU students, faculty, staff and members of the public.

Basic Self-Defence Series

Through in-depth discussion and interactive participation, participants will come away with a greater awareness and skills to more confidently respond to potentially concerning and aggressive behaviour.

These workshops are generally scheduled separately for those who identify as women or non-binary, and those who identify as men or non-binary. All gender identities are welcome and participants must be at least 13 years of age. Participants are invited to choose the session that is most comfortable for them or contact a member of the Security team to discuss options.

Eligibility

Participants must be 13 years old or older to participate.

Basic Self-Defence Series for Women

This four-part series is designed to help women develop basic hands-on defence training skills. Everyone who identifies as a woman may register for this course.

The series takes place over four days for a total of 12 hours. Please note that skills are built upon progressively throughout the series, therefore attendance at all sessions is strongly encouraged.

Basic Self-Defence Series for Men

This is a series taking place over three days for a total of 9 hours. Please note that skills are built upon progressively throughout the series, therefore attendance at all sessions is strongly encouraged.

Basic Self-Defence Workshop

Open to all community members, including TMU students, faculty and staff, this one and half hour workshop is a preview of the Basic Self-Defence Series. Participants will be taught how to recognize and respond to concerning or aggressive behaviour.

Key learning outcomes

Participants will come away with:

  • how to recognize and respond to concerning or aggressive behaviour;
  • how to build awareness of safety and security issues; and
  • some basic hands-on defence training.
