De-Escalating Potentially Violent Situations

De-escalating Potentially Violent Situations is an intensive eight hour session open to TMU students, faculty, staff and community members. It can be scheduled in a full day or two half day increments, and can be completed either virtually or in person. Using a combination of in-depth discussion and interactive, scenario-based training, participants will gain the knowledge and develop the skills to recognize, assess, de-escalate and respond to potentially violent situations, while prioritizing personal safety. Sessions can be designed to respond to specific situations.

Key learning outcomes

Participants will come away with:

  • a greater awareness of how anger and violence interplay;
  • knowledge and skills to recognize, assess, de-escalate and respond to potentially violent situations;
  • an understanding of how to be assertive, use interpersonal communication to one’s benefit and assess and leverage one’s own individual communication style; and
  • stronger problem-solving skills.
