Request Security Coverage
All security coverage for Toronto Metropolitan University must be provided by TMU Community Safety and Security. In addition, only Toronto Police Service and TMU’s campus security officers have the authority to enforce the law on our campus. No external agencies, organizations or persons are authorized to provide security services on campus without approval from the university.
In some cases, events or activities on campus require security staff to support the safety of attendees, and Community Safety and Security will work with internal and external community members to support these needs. TMU students, faculty, staff and external visitors can make a request for extra security staff for their event on campus, which will be assessed for approval by our team.
To request supplementary coverage, please email security@torontomu.ca.
We ask that you provide us with as much time as possible when requesting extra coverage. Generally, we are only able to accommodate requests with a minimum of ten business days notice.
How to book event space and request security coverage
There are two methods for booking space for events on campus—one for students and a separate process for faculty, staff and visitors.
Students
TMU students who wish to book an event space must sign in to ExploreTMU and complete a request for space via the Event Risk Management Form. Upon reviewing your completed form, the Risk Review Team will contact you if security is required for your event and will provide instructions for arranging for security coverage.
Faculty, staff and visitors
TMU faculty, staff and external visitors can book event space by completing Event and Space Reservation’s Space Reservation Request Form. Upon reviewing your completed form, the Event and Space Reservations team will contact you if security is required for your event and will provide instructions for arranging for security coverage.
Risk assessments and security plans
Each event is reviewed to determine whether a risk assessment or security plan is required, providing recommendations for appropriate security coverage and/or the need for police presence, if required. TMU has authorized GardaWorld Security to act as its agents when enforcing Ontario’s Trespass to Property Act (external link) .
Rates
Community Safety and Security charges clients an hourly rate for security coverage. To ensure fairness and avoid logistical challenges in distinguishing internal and external groups, TMU students, faculty and staff and external community members are charged the same security coverage rates.
If needed for large-scale requests, Community Safety and Security will bill clients for Toronto Police Service coverage and for the costs of renting external radio equipment if campus radios are insufficient.

- sales transaction monitoring at events
- crowd or traffic control
In instances where specialized security coverage is required, rates will be provided by the contract security provider and will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
