Bootcamps team hosts Master Class in partnership with Fidelity Investments
Students had the chance to sharpen their communication and presentation skills for business success at a Master Class, organized in partnership between the Ted Rogers School of Management’s Business Career Hub and Fidelity Investments Canada, one of Canada’s leading investment management firms.
The Master Class, called “Stand Up and Stand Out,” was a two-day program that took place virtually on July 3, 2020 and July 10, 2020. The class consisted of three sessions: Communication Styles, Delivering a Well-Structured Presentation and Mastering Your Message, and was facilitated by specialists from Fidelity. A total of 44 students attended the sessions (43 undergraduate students and one alumnus).
“The Business Career Hub is thrilled to have Fidelity as a partner to host Master Classes,” says Graham Sogawa, Executive Director, BCH. “These engagements provide students with a unique opportunity to leverage what they learn in the classroom with the skills developed in Bootcamps to solve real industry problems. They will build student confidence and showcase the amazing talent at the Ted Rogers School to employers.”
Master Classes challenge students to demonstrate the technical and interpersonal skills developed in BCH’s Bootcamps to solve business problems. Students who have completed a combination of different Bootcamps (selected by the industry partner) are invited to participate in these Master Class sessions.
The program provides industry partners with access to highly-trained student talent. During these interactive sessions, partners have the opportunity to identify students with the right combination of technical, interpersonal, problem solving skills and organizational fit. This enables them to share their expertise and build awareness of their organization, and also to create strong talent pipelines and recruit more effectively.
“We are so pleased to work with Ryerson University and BCH to offer sessions on valuable skills students will need regardless of the work they do,” says Linda Passarelli, Vice President Talent Management, Fidelity. “The students were very engaged during the sessions, asking great questions along the way and participating in the breakout sessions fully. We look forward to our continued partnership with Ryerson and working with the students in the various Bootcamps.”
Bootcamps, launched by BCH in 2018, help better prepare students for the workforce by providing them with industry-level technical training, such as Excel and Salesforce. They also provide employment opportunities for students, who work as facilitators and share their expertise with peers. In the 2019-2020 academic year, Bootcamps engaged more than 10,000 participants and received the TalentEgg Special Award for Innovation by a Career Centre.
