TRSM turns 10: Ted Rogers School of Management celebrates a decade of achievements
“Thanks to the generous gift from the Rogers family, our school, which was founded in 1948, has evolved to be Canada’s leading diverse entrepreneurial business school, developing the next generation of collaborative and creative business leaders,” said Dean Steven Murphy. “I am also proud to announce that we will rename our flagship Master of Business Administration program as the Ted Rogers MBA, to reflect the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship for which Ted Rogers himself was known.”
The 2007 gift established an annual endowment that funds 52 awards and scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students. To date, nearly 500 students have benefited from this fund. The gift also established the Loretta Rogers Research Chair, currently held by Professor Cheri Bradish, an expert in sports marketing and director of the newly established Sports Innovation Hub.
Marco Briganti, second-year hospitality and tourism management student, and recipient of one of the Ted Rogers School of Management Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships, notes that the award helped him pursue his career goal of running his own hotel franchise in the future: “When I had my heart set on building a career in the tourism industry, Ted Rogers School of Management was the first school I researched and ultimately chose to attend. This scholarship helped me make that dream a reality.”
Over the past 10 years, TRSM has seen exponential growth in its programs, research and reputation. The school has expanded its undergraduate career-relevant Bachelor of Commerce degree offerings from four to 12, including unique degrees in real estate, retail management, business technology management, law and business and hospitality and tourism management.
The newly named Ted Rogers MBA program, launched in 2006, offers business professionals the ability to specialize in niche areas such as real estate finance and international business to advance their careers upon graduation. Students have the opportunity to also take what they learn beyond the classroom by starting up new business ventures or working with remote communities to improve Canada’s social and economic well-being.
TRSM has also grown the number of research centres, institutes and labs to 14, with industry-connected faculty conducting research in areas such as social media and corporate social responsibility. The growing reputation of the school has also attracted distinguished visiting professors and notable figures from the private and public sectors to teach and deliver lectures to students, enriching students’ knowledge by sharing industry insights and experience.
The business faculty has established international partnerships and exchanges with post-secondary institutions worldwide, most recently with Asia, Australia and Africa. In recognition of the school’s growing reputation, TRSM received accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business in 2011, joining just five per cent of business schools worldwide who have earn this international designation.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the gift from the Rogers family which made much of this possible, TRSM will host a series of key events throughout the year, including:
· Ryerson Commerce Society’s Week of Welcome Block Party (Sept. 8)
· Ted Rogers Management Conference Gala (March 9 to 11, 2017)
· Alumni Awards (May 2017)
There will also be special events to celebrate the Ted Rogers MBA program’s 10th anniversary, including networking sessions, academic workshops, a conference and a 10th anniversary convocation gala.
The Rogers family continues to be among Ryerson’s most generous supporters, contributing more than $33 million to the university over the years, including a gift of $1 million to the Ted Rogers Leadership Centre in June of 2015. The family has established a host of undergraduate and graduate student fellowships and awards, and lent the Rogers name to the Communications Centre, to research chairs at TRSM and in the Faculty of Communication and Design, and of course to the business faculty itself.
