Rob Silver started his role as distinguished visiting professor April 1.

Rob Silver, lawyer, political commentator and entrepreneur, has been appointed distinguished visiting professor supporting the Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM), the Faculty of Communication & Design (FCAD), and the DMZ.

Founding partner at Crestview Strategy, a full-service public affairs agency, Silver led a wide range of national and multinational accounts. In this role, Silver was the first Canadian policy advisor for Facebook, Uber and Amazon. He also provided strategic advice to senior executives at one of Canada's largest financial institutions and one of the world's leading mining companies. He left Crestview Strategy in 2015.

“Ryerson is honoured to welcome Rob Silver to our academic community,” said Chris Evans, interim provost and vice president academic. “With many touch points across campus, Rob will engage students, faculty and administration through a number of public forums.”

Silver was a regular panellist for five years on CBC's Power and Politics, a program providing an insider’s view on the Canadian political scene. He has also written about politics and policy for publications including the Globe and Mail and Maclean’s.

“Rob has invested in and worked with a number of digital and technology companies, including the Torontoist,” said Charles Falzon, dean, Faculty of Communication & Design. “His entrepreneurial attitude will resonate with FCAD students, helping them to assess opportunities, take risks and optimize the skills of a multidisciplinary team.”

“Rob Silver has an impressive background in public policy,” said Steven Murphy, dean, TRSM.  “His experience in energy, financial services, outsourcing and infrastructure sectors offers an abundance of opportunities to enhance relevant TRSM programs and events for our students and our community.”

Silver earned his law degree from Western University and practiced at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP. In 2010, Silver was recognized as an international political rising star by Campaigns and Elections Magazine.

“Rob’s expertise on industry policy will be a great asset to the DMZ community and at the Legal Innovation Zone,” said Abdullah Snobar, executive director, the DMZ. “From digital policy to the sharing economy and regulatory issues, Rob will offer strategic advice to a wide range of startups.”
