Enactus Ryerson Stands Tall on Podium at Enactus Nationals
Enactus Ryerson had an extremely strong showing at this year’s Enactus National Expo, which took place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from May 2nd to May 4th. Facing stiff competition from 1,500 delegates representing 54 of the country’s leading universities and colleges, the Ryerson team won the Scotiabank EcoLiving Green Challenge and Scotiabank Youth Empowerment Challenge, and finished second overall in the national competition.
Nancy Pham, Vice President of Operations at Enactus Ryerson, says the team spent over five months preparing for the national expo, and learned a lot in the process:
“Our students were able to develop themselves personally and professionally through the preparation of these presentations. They acquired and built on their interpersonal, organizational, analytical, presentation and technical skills through this competition.”
The judging teams for the main competition were composed of CEOs and senior management from corporate sponsors, who were provided with profiles of the Enactus Ryerson team members, allowing them to showcase their skills, experience, and accomplishments and advance their professional careers.
Enactus Ryerson’s presentation mainly focused on their Growing North (external link) project, which is helping to alleviate food insecurity in Canada’s far north, and also showcased a handful of other Enactus programs and initiatives.
Nancy Pham says all of Enactus Ryerson’s work was taken into consideration: “It was our impact, progress and accomplishments through all 11 of our projects, in five countries, that earned us the 2nd place finish.”
Pham says the support of TRSM faculty was essential to the team’s success at the National Expo: “Throughout the past five months, both Professor Phil Walsh and Professor David Schlanger dedicated countless hours of their time to advising our team and presentations. They spent many Sundays at school with our team to help build, structure and perfect our presentations while also helping our team members on their presentation skills. We also had support from Professor Roy Morley, who provided his advice and feedback on our presentation and supported our team at the competition. And both Dean Steven Murphy and Associate Dean Elizabeth Evans attended the competition to support our team.”
