CKFG FM Flow 98.7 has a new award for j-school and music students.

The award known as the FLOW 98.7 FM Black Scholar Award, is meant to help FLOW’s goal of serving the Black community in the GTA by providing opportunities to emerging musical artists and students in journalism and radio broadcasting.

Gary Gunter, FLOW’s general manager, said he’s very excited the award will uplift Black students and help focus on the arts and musical programs for the next generation.

“I don’t think it removes barriers, but it makes it easier and allows for that audience to know that there are various directions you can go in and various organizations that support these types of challenges,” Gunter said.

Students applying for the award must submit a 250-word statement detailing their interest in studying and pursuing a career in journalism or professional music.

The award is open to full-time journalism or professional music students who identify as Black (including those who identify as Afro-Caribbean or African-Canadian) with a minimum GPA of 2.67.  The deadline for applications is Oct. 7, 2022.

“This award shares our commitment as a school to creating an inclusive community where impactful storytelling, and Black stories in particular, are valued and celebrated for their contribution to the public good,” said Ravindra Mohabeer, chair of the school of journalism.
