Little did I know it at the time, but I started my journalism career in the 80s. I was 10 and submitted a poem and a book report to the teenage page of The Toronto Sun. They were both published!
Fast-forward to the late 90s when I wrote for The Varsity at the University of Toronto and was the associate news editor. My very first published piece there was about advertisements in bathroom stalls. The entire piece was re-written by my editor! My first in-person interview that I can remember was with Dr. Henry Morgentaler. What a trip!
Then I was part of the pioneering digital team at globeandmail.com from 1999-2006, introducing breaking news to the site for the first time ever, then covering memorable events like 9-11 and the death of Pope John Paul II. I worked at the newspaper as well, writing, editing and laying out pages -- in every section except sports!
At 680 NEWS, I was the first digital editor and now at CityNews I'm a manager of a team of digital journalists.
I bring all of this news experience into the classroom every week. I teach students real-world skills such as live reporting and interviewing. Students often say it's the most fun and practical course they are taking.
My team at 680 NEWS and CityNews have won various awards in digital categories from the RTDNA, the Murrows and COPAs.
