5 resources to support your safety on campus

September 03, 2025
Many people walking along Gould Street with TMU banners on the street poles.

At Toronto Metropolitan University, we’re committed to helping build a safe, secure and resilient university community for our students, faculty, staff and all who step onto campus. Whether you’re on our Toronto or Brampton campus, our Community Safety and Security team provides 24/7 front-line coverage through our security guards and lead impactful, community-centric initiatives that build and support resilient campuses and neighbourhoods.

Now that fall classes have officially begun, we’re taking this opportunity to remind the TMU community of important resources and programs designed to support your personal safety on campus. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the following tools and offerings from Community Safety and Security and consider how best to make use of the resources to support your own safety as you study, research and work on campus.

You don’t need to go alone: Contact Walk Safe

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, snow, rain or shine, TMU community members and visitors can arrange for a uniformed security staff member to accompany them to buildings on campus and nearby locations like transit or parking lots.

Interested? Request Walk Safe services on our Toronto campus by calling 416-979-5040 or emailing walksafe@torontomu.ca or on our Brampton campus by calling 416-598-5950 or emailing somsecurity@torontomu.ca.

Participate in a customized Personal Safety Planning Session

While these sessions are offered to individuals, they can also be provided in a group setting for a unit, department or group of students. Additionally, they can be in person or virtual.

Download the TMU Safe app to your phone and sign up for text messages

TMU Safe is the university’s mass notification tool, providing community members with push notifications regarding urgent situations on campus that pose immediate safety or security threats. Plus, you’ll be immediately notified of any Snow Days this semester!

Note: With the opening of the School of Medicine in Brampton, TMU Safe notifications will be issued to the entire TMU student, faculty and staff mailing list, regardless of your primary place of study / work.

Haven’t used the TMU Safe app in a while?

If it's been some time since you’ve opened the app on your phone, follow the instructions below to ensure the app is still working correctly.

iPhone users: Check to determine if your phone has offloaded the app due to inactivity. If this is the case, redownload the app to ensure it’s working correctly.

Android users: Double-check to determine if the app has entered hibernation mode. You can prevent this by redownloading the app and disabling this feature within the app’s settings when automatically prompted to do so upon downloading.

Access campus buildings with your OneCard and help prevent tailgating

On both our downtown Toronto and Brampton campuses, all exterior campus doors are OneCard access only. Use your OneCard to enter buildings on campus by tapping your card against the card reader located at exterior building entrances.

Don’t have a OneCard?

Learn how to apply for a OneCard by visiting the OneCard website.

Help prevent tailgating

With buildings on campus requiring a OneCard for entry, community members are asked not to hold doors open for other individuals as all TMU students, faculty and staff are expected to have their OneCards on them at all times to access campus buildings.

If you encounter an emergency on campus, contact 911

While not a resource, it’s important that TMU community members know what to do if they encounter an emergency on campus. If you encounter an emergency on campus, or an immediate threat to your safety, contact 911.

If it is safe to do so, you can also inform TMU Security by calling 416-979-5040 on our Toronto campus or calling 416-598-5950 on our Brampton campus. Learn more about emergency management at TMU and review customized instructions for students, faculty and staff, and leaders.
