Saunas
The Recreation & Athletic Centre is equipped with two dry saunas located in the women's and men's changerooms between the shower areas and pool.
A sauna is a small, heated room designed for relaxation, hygiene, and therapeutic perspiration, typically featuring wooden interiors and temperatures between 80-90°C. Originating from Finland, it involves sweating on wooden benches, often followed by a cold plunge or shower.
Sauna Use: Health & Safety Guidelines
- Medical Precautions: Check with a doctor if pregnant, or if you have high blood pressure or heart conditions.
- Reduce Risk of Overheating: Limit time in the sauna (typically 10-15 mins) and avoid staying too long. Exit immediately if uncomfortable, dizzy or sleepy.
- Hydration: Users are encouraged to hydrate before and after use.
- Hygiene: Users are required to shower before entry and using towels on benches.
- Safety Hazards: Objects (heating unit, temperature probe, etc.) and surfaces in the sauna space can be extremely hot, and metal jewellery can also heat up rapidly - exercise caution, avoid contact and remove jewellery.
Dry saunas: No splashing water
The saunas in the Recreation & Athletic Centre are dry saunas, not steam rooms!
- Splashing water on the rocks, walls or thermostat, or otherwise tampering with the equipment, will result in a damaged and broken sauna
- If you witness someone abusing the space, please report it to staff
