Maintenance Update: RAC HVAC Improvements

Ongoing investment sees RAC Gym 2 and RAC South Entrance close end of June
June 16, 2026

Recent warm conditions

Users of the RAC would have noticed warmer temperatures in the facility in recent weeks, especially during the most recent hot and humid stretch during the week of June 8. Historically, this would not have been unexpected at RAC, however extensive work has been completed in recent years to replace aged HVAC units.

After the fitness centre's cooling unit was replaced in October 2025, all spaces have now been renewed, with the lone exception being RAC Gym 2 (see below for information on its imminent replacement). Our partners in Facilities Management & Development have been working hard to address recent issues, and the new units are steadily improving conditions in the RAC.

While we appreciate your patience as systems are regularly recalibrated and especially this spring/summer as new units come online, students and members can expect conditions in the RAC to be markedly improved compared to past years and very much adequately cooled.

Upcoming work in RAC Gym 2

A work schedule for the replacement of the HVAC unit serving RAC Gym 2 is being finalized for the end of June 2026. Once complete, users should notice a significant improvement in air quality and cooling in RAC Gym 2. During portions of this work, the following areas will be temporarily closed for equipment load-in and load-out:

  • RAC Gym 2
  • RAC South Entrance
  • South interior stairs from the Quad down to Lower Level 3 (LL3)

When the RAC South Entrance is closed, users will be directed to enter through the RAC North Entrance, accessible through Kerr Hall via 31 Gerrard St. East. We will confirm the timing of this work and related closures via facility signage. Thank you in advance for your patience as this important work is completed.
