Congratulations to Nalyn Tindall ‘25 for winning the National Newsmedia Council-CAJ Student Journalism Award of Excellence at the Canadian Association of Journalists (external link) (CAJ) gala in Calgary, Alta. on Saturday, May 31.
Tindall won the award for her piece in The Eyeopener, “Getting by on gig work: The hidden costs of ‘easy’ money (external link) .”
She said she was nervous the night of the gala but became more comfortable thinking of the two days at the conference she had spent expanding her network and learning things from her peers.

Her category was the first of the night — Tindall felt her heart race as the room listened to clips from the entries.
“They called the silver winner, and I was like, ‘Oh, it (the story) was amazing. I probably didn’t win’,” Tindall said, recalling her thoughts at the time.
“Then they called me, and I was like, ‘Oh shit, that’s crazy’,” she said. “I was honestly very shocked.”

Tindall said it felt surreal to stand on the stage in front of a room filled with established journalists as she talked about her story and why she thought it was important.
She said winning the award was an encouraging way to end her J-school experience.
“Knowing that I’m on the right track, I’ve been doing good work, and I hope this award will help me [to] continue doing that.”
