Fatima Raza (external link)  ‘24 is one of six inaugural recipients of the CJF-CP News Creator Fellowships (external link) .

She's most excited about this fellowship as it focuses on video journalism.

Raza has always loved capturing stories visually through her phone or camera, so this opportunity is “a dream come true.”

While finishing up her final year at j-school, she was a breaking news reporter for the Toronto Star (external link) , then last summer she was a national news reporter for The Globe and Mail (external link)  and most recently was a reporter for Metroland Media (external link) .

Although Raza is no stranger to the fast-paced and rigorous environment, she’s looking forward to working at The Canadian Press, as it’s a wire service.

“I want to break into an international career in journalism.”

Her advice for Journalism students applying for fellowships is to try cold emailing and talk to their professors.

Raza got her first job at j-school by emailing professor Gavin Adamson and associate professor Asmaa Malik, asking about research opportunities. "I would not be here in my career without their support," she said.

"All of my references leading up to now have been profs…they always have advice to give about navigating this challenging field, especially as a young journalist, as a racialized journalist, I always look up to them."
