The Knowing

Journalism at The Creative School welcomes Anishinaabe author and journalist Tanya Talaga for the 2025 Atkinson Lecture to share excerpts and insights from her latest book and documentary series, The Knowing. 

The Knowing is an investigation into Canadian history through an Indigenous lens, exposing readers to the intergenerational trauma caused by Canada's genocidal treatment of Indigenous communities. Talaga shares this history by tracing the story of her great-great grandmother Annie Carpenter and her family "as they experienced decades of government- and Church-sanctioned enfranchisement and genocide."

This revisionist telling of Canada's history is critical to our understanding of the country and our capacity as journalists to report on it.
