“Solidarity in journalism means journalists stand for basic human dignity and against suffering. The decision to report – or not report – on these conditions inherently leaves neutrality behind” (Solidarity Journalism Initiative). Journalism scholar Anita Varma (University of Texas at Austin), who first identified the concept of Solidarity Journalism, leads this discussion with news stakeholders from Canada and the U.S. who are shifting the paradigm from narrow definitions of news to information that empowers communities to engage with issues that are relevant to their lives. Among the changemakers joining Dr. Varma are Jiquanda Johnson (Brown Media Impact Group), Sean Holman (Climate Disaster Project), Odette Auger (IndigiNews).
