RSJ grad becomes managing editor of Next Magazine
Luc Rinaldi, a Ryerson School of Journalism class of 2014 grad, has been chosen as the managing editor for Next Magazine (external link) , a new, free music magazine that will have its first issue come out in December.
Next examines what is going on in music, arts, and fun. It provides essential tips on how to get the most out of life in Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary. Michael Hollett, the co-founder of Now Magazine, created Next (external link) .
Rinaldi said the magazine was looking for a managing editor, so he applied for the job.
He took this past summer off to record an album, so he was in a music mindset.
“So far, it’s been great,” he said. “I’ve loved music all my life. Having the chance to work at a magazine that’s focused first and foremost on music is a real joy.”
Rinaldi said he has enjoyed working with his team members.
The first issue will include music coverage that includes album reviews and interviews with Canadian and international artists. There will be sections focusing on food, drink, cannabis, gaming, fashion, movies, and television shows.
Next will appeal to people who might not read magazines. The target audience is 18- to 25-year-olds. The magazine hopes to be humorous, witty, and splashy.
Rinaldi said he is a believer in Canada’s music industry. He is happy he will be providing Canada’s music industry with attention.
It felt like he had two lives before where he was a journalist and a musician, but now he says they are coming together.
He put out a call for pitches (external link) once he started and has since received a flood of story ideas. He believes people are resonating with Next because there is not a national magazine dedicated to the same content.
“I think there is something for everybody in this magazine,” said Rinaldi. “You may not be a music nerd, but everybody eats and watches TV and movies here and again. I think part of why it’s important for people to read this magazine and enjoy it is it will be good for them.”
