This Black History Month, join us for a private screening of Mina Shum’s The Ninth Floor. The film outlines an incident whereby Black Caribbean students at Sir George Williams University (which merged with Loyola College to form what is now named Concordia University), brought forward claims of anti-Black racism against a white professor.

When their claims were not taken seriously, Black students and allies occupied the university’s computer lab, located on the ninth floor, in protest.

The purpose of this event is to:

  1. provide space for Black narratives
  2. include these events in the historical record as well as highlight historical events that centre Black experiences in Canada and the activism that helped shape contemporary policies and practices
  3. illustrate how allyship is critical to disrupt systemic anti-Black racism
  4. emphasize the importance of institutionalizing equitable and transparent practices and policies in academic institutions

The film connects to this year's theme for Black History Month, February and Forever, as a reminder that anti-Black racism remains a daily reality.

The university is committed to the accessibility and inclusion of persons with disabilities. If you require any accessibility accommodations to ensure your full participation, please let us know on the registration form or email equity@torontomu.ca.
