Dr. Shafi Bhuiyan Ph.D
Dr. Shafi Bhuiyan PhD, MBBS, MPH, MBA is an award-winning faculty member and internationally recognized leader in global public health training, research and education, with diverse experience in developed and developing countries. In his early career, he worked as the founding liaison of the maternal and child health research and training national institute. Following completion of his PhD he worked as JSPS postdoctoral scientist and faculty at Osaka University, Japan; ASEAN Institute of Health Development, Mahidol University Thailand; and University of Health Sciences Bangladesh. In 2010 Dr. Bhuiyan emigrated to Canada, where he began a career focused on how equity-informed approaches can improve health services and training. His positions have included faculty member at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, at the University of Toronto; former distinguished visiting scholar at Toronto Metropolitan University and visiting professor at Bangladeshi University of Health Sciences.
His focus has been on improving the way we deploy and refine global health resources to improve health system performance and the equity of health system performance in local and global contexts. Dr. Bhuiyan a co-creator of a pilot MScCH program for internationally educated health professionals (IEHP) at U of T; and a co-founder and program lead of the clinical public health certificate program for IEHPs at U of T, which provides IEHPs with training to transition into health care education and jobs. He has received many awards, including a Council of Agencies Serving South Asians Award for civic engagement and leadership in Canada, and his humanitarian services and leadership have been recognized by Lions Club International.
