MAC Fitness Centre: Changes & Closure Dec-18
Students and members returned to a very different fitness centre at the Mattamy Athletic Centre following the Thanksgiving weekend, with new equipment and a new layout throughout the space. Importantly, the changes put the space back into a more familiar “pre-COVID” layout and division of space with the sport performance/group training side of the facility.
The most notable change was the addition of four new power racks and lifting platforms, doubling the previous setup. Highly-sought after and versatile training pieces, we’re pleased to ease the pressure by providing more of what you want. Also coming to the platforms are new “silencer pads” to enable safe and quiet dropping of weights - an important win whether you are a user of the platforms or not, as we work to protect the facility and make it as comfortable as possible for all users. If you are dropping weights on the platforms, please ensure you have the silencer pads in place moving forward.

The layout changes haven’t been without their challenges, however. While the platforms are a win, we’ve also witnessed the tension points: Namely the congestion in the selectorized equipment nearest the front entrance, and in the dumbbell areas. Thank you to the students and members who have brought forward both concerns and recommendations.
On Sunday, December 18, the MAC Fitness Centre will close for the day to allow for further changes to be made to the space, including the installation of a new floor under the heavy lifting area (always part of the plan) and to make layout improvements to address the issues named above.
The RAC facility, including the Fitness Centre, Functional Training Room and Immersive Space Cardio & Strength Circuit, will be fully operational during the one-day closure at MAC.
