As the Recreation & Athletics Centre (RAC) reopens this Winter 2022, the front entrance at the south end of the Kerr Hall Quad and the rear/accessible entrance from 31 Gerrard Street East will both be impacted by construction and an alternate route has been made available as outlined below. The construction is expected to be completed later this spring and updates will be communicated here.

Alternate Accessible Route: 350 Victoria Entrance

Enter the lower level at 350 Victoria Street, just north of Gould St. The entry to the accessible ramp is at the northwest corner of Gould and Victoria streets (see photos with map below). Once inside, follow the temporary overhead signage marked “Recreation & Athletics Centre” to the underground north entrance to the RAC, located just past the pool and accessed via Kerr Hall North.

A portion of the route includes the up-and-down ramps in the hallway between Jorgensen Hall and Kerr Hall North, with the doors on the east side kept open by magnetic holds. During this construction period, it is part of our regular operating procedures to regularly check to ensure these doors remain open, however passers-by may release them, making access more difficult for visitors using mobility devices.

If you need assistance accessing the RAC, our staff are here to support. Please contact our service desk in advance or in the moment at recreation@torontomu.ca or 416-979-5096 for support.

What are the projects?

While disruptive, both construction projects are aimed at improving accessibility concerns at the RAC (and other locations on campus) and are part of a broader plan to modernize and make Athletics & Recreation and university-wide spaces more accessible. Both projects are managed by Facilities Management & Development.

At 31 Gerrard Street East, the elevator located in Kerr Hall North is being modernized to improve service and reliability. Upon completion of the work, the accessible route to the RAC will revert back to this entrance and elevator.

At the south entrance to the RAC, found within the historical facade at the south end of the Kerr Hall Quad, improvements to accessibility, safety and visibility are the primary focus, including replacing and levelling the aged interior and exterior stairs, installation of handrails, addition of new lighting and digital signage identifying the Recreation & Athletics Centre.
