English Language Requirements

 Before you start your degree program at Toronto Metropolitan:

  1. Will you complete four years of full-time study at the high school level in Canada or in a country where English is the first language (see list below), or in a school where English is the primary language of instruction?
  2. Will you successfully complete a two or three-year diploma program (non-ESL) at a public Ontario College?
  3. Will you successfully complete one year of full-time study (non-ESL, degree-level courses) at an accredited university where English is both the first language of the country (see list below) and language of instruction at the institution?

If you answered YES to any of the questions above, you are not required to provide proof of English language proficiency. Other criteria may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

If you answered NO to all of the questions above, you are required to provide proof of English language proficiency. Acceptable tests and scores, as well as submission instructions, are listed below.

Your application for admission must include your full academic history (all secondary and post-secondary schools attended). All academic transcripts must be submitted via your ChooseTMU applicant portal (except OUAC 101 applicants) in order for us to verify the above.

Toronto Metropolitan reserves the right to request proof of English language proficiency, in the form of an acceptable English language test score or alternate documentation, from any applicant or admitted student (regardless of background).

All applicants, including those who must submit proof of English language proficiency, are required to present a senior level English course (equivalent to a Grade 12 U English course in Ontario). Toronto Metropoitan will not accept Grade 12 U English, the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), or equivalent in lieu of a test of English language proficiency.

To determine if you are required to provide us with an English language proficiency test score, view the blue bar entitled "English Proficiency Result" in your ChooseTMU Applicant Portal.
