Message from the Vice-President, Research and Innovation

Message from the Vice-President, Research and Innovation

At Toronto Metropolitan University, our scholarly, research and creative activities are shaped by an understanding of where we can make a difference. Our researchers work closely with partners, both public and private, to develop solutions that are practical, responsible and informed by the human experience. Increasingly, this includes the use of AI and digital technologies, not as abstract ideas but as tools that help address real needs in health care, sustainable infrastructure and the broader economy.

Our 2025–2030 Strategic Research Plan sets out seven strategic themes that reflect this direction. They highlight areas where TMU is advancing new ideas, strengthening community partnerships, and preparing the next generation of researchers. In a period marked by rapid technological change and growing uncertainties, these themes speak to the essential role universities play in shaping solutions and developing talent.

In this issue of Innovation, you’ll see these themes expressed through projects that show both depth and purpose, whether by finding new ways to treat cancer, addressing the challenges of our aging population or examining our digital connections.

I'm pleased to share these stories where innovation and human impact connect.
