Indigenous Applicants: How to Apply
Applicants who choose to self-identify as Indigenous, First Nations, Mètis or Inuit can indicate that they wish to participate in the Indigenous Admissions Process (IAP). The IAP is designed to counter some of the systemic disadvantages that may affect Indigenous applicants' access to the program.
We recognize the value that Indigenous students bring to our program, as well as the benefit they offer to both the general and the Indigenous midwifery communities in Ontario and across Canada. The Indigenous Admissions Process is designed to counter some of the systemic disadvantages that may make it harder for Indigenous applicants to access the MEP.
The Indigenous Admissions Process (IAP) is run by an Indigenous admissions team which typically includes Indigenous midwives, Indigenous faculty and Indigenous midwifery consumers. IAP interviews are scheduled during the same week as multiple mini interviews and are conducted by an Indigenous interview panel (typically 3-4 people).
Applicants who wish to self-identify as Indigenous, First Nations, Mètis or Inuit and/or who wish to participate in the IAP instead of the mainstream admissions process can do so through the Midwifery Form. Instructions on how to access this form can be found under Submitting Supporting Documents.
The IAP reflects TMU's policies and practices concerning the recruitment, retention and success of Indigenous students across the institution.
Midwifery is a rewarding and demanding career option. Before applying, please visit the Association of Ontario Midwives (external link) website to learn more about midwifery in Ontario, explore the TMU MEP website to learn more about our program, and make sure you have met the requirements in order to apply.
It's important to be aware of the following:
- The Midwifery Education Program (MEP) is very competitive and has a limited enrolment. There are approximately 45 applicants accepted into the MEP program every year.
- Successful applicants have a strong academic record and usually have completed one or more years of university or have equivalent experience before applying.
- Grades are only one of the components reviewed for entry into this rigorous and rewarding program.
- This program is not available to international students.
- February 1st is the deadline to submit all required application documents.
- Applicants with in-progress prerequisite subject(s) must present final or midterm grades by the February 1 deadline.
- TMU midwifery clinical placements and interprofessional placements are primarily within the Greater Toronto Area and Greater Ontario Area.
Indigenous applicants, like all applicants, must meet the minimum academic requirements for entry into the program. These are outlined in the links below based on educational background.
For detailed academic requirements and instructions on how to apply, Indigenous applicants should choose the applicant type that best describes who you are (in addition to being Indigenous). The option to participate in the Indigenous Admissions Process is found on the Midwifery Form, which is required of all applicants.

Midwifery Form
In addition to meeting competitive academic requirements, you are required to submit the following non-academic requirements. Your ability to follow and adhere to the requirements is part of the assessment of your application.
The Midwifery Form has 4 subsections:
1. Program of Study Preference
Applicants are provided information about the different programs of study available at the TMU MEP. These include the (PDF file) 4 year full time, (PDF file) 5 year part time and (PDF file) 2 year Post Baccalaureate Program for Health Professionals (PBHP). Applicants are asked to state their preferred program of study. Applicants wishing to be considered for the PBHP are required to provide additional documentation. Successful applicants are informed of their program of study as part of their offer of admission.
2. Placement Area Preference
Applicants are provided information about the two different TMU MEP geographical placement areas, which we refer to as the GTA (greater Toronto area) and the GOA (greater Ontario are). Applicants are asked to provide their preference for their placement area. Placement areas are assigned at the time of admission and are included in offers of admission. Students will not be able to request a switch between placement areas after admittance. Please review the MEP website for information about both areas.
3. The Racial Equity Admissions Self-ID
The Racial Equity Admissions Self-ID is used to promote equitable representations of Black, Persons of Colour (BPOC) and/or racialized people in the multiple mini interviews for admission. Further information on this process can be found on our website here: The Racial Equity Admissions Self ID.
4. The Indigenous Admissions Process
The Indigenous Admissions Process (IAP) is designed to counter some of the systemic disadvantages that may affect Indigenous applicants' access to the program. Further information on this process can be found on our website: The Indigenous Admissions Process. Applicants who choose to self-identify as Indigenous, First Nations, Métis, or Inuit can indicate that they wish to participate in the IAP by completing this section of the Midwifery Form.

IAP Assessment
The IAP Interview Process
- Indigenous applicants chosen for an interview through the IAP process will be invited to participate in a 45-minute interview conducted by an Indigenous team that whenever possible will consist of an:
- Indigenous midwife
- Indigenous midwifery consumer
- Indigenous faculty member from the MEP.
- Indigenous candidates who choose to participate in the IAP, will participate in the IAP panel interview INSTEAD OF the Personal Interviews (described below).
- Applicants can contact the Indigenous Student Services (ISS) to find out what kind of services and supports are available as an Indigenous candidate to the MEP, and as a TMU student.
Midwifery Education Program (MEP) Admissions Interviews
- Applicants will be notified through their ChooseTMU Applicant Portal if they are being offered an admissions interview. It is important to accept your interview offer by the stated deadline, otherwise, we will assume you are no longer interested and will offer your spot to another applicant.
- MEP Admissions Interviews are conducted online.
- Applicants are asked a series of interview questions and the recorded answers are reviewed by the assessor.
- Interviews typically focus on a number of areas, including:
- Motivation to become a midwife
- Qualities such as empathy, responsibility, flexibility, and self-reflexivity.
- Awareness of the reality and demands of being a midwifery student and a midwife in Ontario.
- Skills such as communication, critical thinking, and problem solving.
Post Interview Process
- After the interview stage is completed, offers of admissions will be made to approximately 45 successful applicants in early May.
- Applicants are notified of their admission decisions through their ChooseTMU account.
- A select number of applicants who were not granted admission may be placed on a waiting list.
- All waiting lists are automatically dissolved at the beginning of the school year (end of the first week of classes). So, if you have not heard from us by then, and are still interested in the MEP at Toronto Metropolitan University, please reapply for admission for the following year.
Indigenous applicants who do not receive an offer of admission to the MEP are invited by Indigenous Student Services to meet with an Academic Support Advisor to see if they are interested in applying for another TMU program, or at another post-secondary institution. Indigenous Student Services supports applicants to try and ensure future success.
