TMU’s Blank Canvas - Reimagining Kerr Hall
The Civil and Architectural Charette: Reimagining Kerr Hall is the first interdisciplinary Charette organized by arc.soc, in partnership with MUES. On September 26-28, the event brought together students from the Department of Architectural Science (DAS) and the Department of Civil Engineering for an intensive 48-hour design challenge, focusing on reimagining one of TMU’s most iconic buildings—Kerr Hall.
Each team, comprising two architecture and two civil engineering students, was tasked to develop schematic proposals and feasibility studies to redesign Kerr Hall as a 21st-century academic hub that integrates sustainability, accessibility, and structural innovation, while responding to the site and geotechnical constraints.
I appreciate the amount of materials that were provided and how thorough the project brief was. It was very fun creating our own story as a group and presenting to professors we know.

I really enjoyed using the theories I’ve learned in my civil engineering classes to come up with solutions for the current issues in Kerr Hall, as well as in our redesign. It was also a fun and valuable experience applying those concepts in a real-world context and working alongside other engineering and architecture students to bring our ideas to life.
