People both shape and are shaped by their surroundings. Exploring and understanding how design is used can create new opportunities and greater freedom. As architects and planners, we learn to recognize the underlying relationships that inform our work.

The spirit of place, diverse human needs, contemporary technology, and physical requirements collectively and profoundly shape architecture and enhance its usefulness.

At the Department of Architectural Science (DAS), architecture, building science, and project management are taught using an integrated approach. Our programs emphasize design and construction as essential components of the architectural concept, rather than treating them as secondary considerations. The curriculum addresses the challenges of climate change to promote a more sustainable building industry, encourages digital craftsmanship, and explores innovative uses for existing buildings.

Students benefit from a forward-thinking learning environment in design studios that employ creative teaching methods and foster an inclusive academic culture. We emphasize core competencies such as design, sketching, three-dimensional visualization, and model fabrication, which are fundamental to effective architectural communication. Cooperative education internships with prominent firms, exchange programs with leading universities, and design-build collaborations contribute to a comprehensive, experiential architectural education. Our master’s and doctoral programs allow students to further enhance and refine their professional expertise, guided by faculty members who lead major projects and research initiatives.
