The Government of Canada has announced $15.9M million in funding to support 76 research projects of 70 faculty experts at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).

A wide range of innovative projects across multiple disciplines will be supported by Tri-Council funding through multiple programs, including Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grants.

“Congratulations to all members of our scholarly, research and creative community who have received this important support,” said Steven N. Liss, vice-president, research and innovation. “We are excited to see the range of research opportunities and disciplines being funded.”

“The breadth of projects showcases the creativity and vision of both our early career researchers and established faculty members. These investments will contribute to training the next generation of innovators, accelerate research being undertaken and help build the networks needed to transform novel and diverse research into solutions with impact that benefits Canadians.”

SSHRC Partnership and Partnership Development Grants

The Creative School’s professor Natalie Alvarez’s project, The Arts Impact Partnership (TAIP): Understanding the Arts’ Civic Impact in the Data-Driven Economy, was awarded a SSHRC Partnership Grant. This project will bring together leading scholars, academic institutions and arts organizations from across Canada as well as Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Partnership Development Grants have been secured by Faculty of Community Services professor Raktim Mitra for Shared Electric Micromobility as a Transportation Solution in Canadian Suburban Communities (SEM-Can) and professor Kathryn Underwood for Indigenous Disability-Affirming Early Learning (IDAEL) and Care Partnership. Professor Anna Triandafyllidou, TMU’s Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration, received funding for the project FUTUREMIG – Futures of Migration and Mobility Partnership.

NSERC Collaborative Research and Training Experience Grant

An NSERC Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) grant was awarded to professor Sharareh Taghipour of the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science and Canada Research Chair in Physical Asset Management to develop the Quantum Computing and Artificial Intelligence for Decision Optimization (QAI4DO) Training Program. A pan-Canadian collaboration designed to equip the next generation with AI, quantum computing and operations optimization skills.

New Frontiers in Research Fund

Finally, two TMU researchers have received funding through the 2024 New Frontiers in Research Fund Exploration competition: Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science professor Vincent Hui for his project Biodesign for Sustainable Construction: Developing Scalable Living Building Materials Integrating Biomineralization and 3D Bioprinting and The Creative School’s professor Jessica Mudry for the project MEDS (Modular Emergency Department Seating) – Remaking the hospital hallway: Flexible modular seating as clinical space in the ER.

Other Funding

Additional SSHRC funding successes announced today include 11 Insight Grants (2024) and 27 Insight Development Grants (2025). Successful projects to be supported by NSERC include a Research Tools and Instruments grant and 30 Discovery Grants, of which, five of the successful applicants received additional early career researcher support through NSERC’s Discovery Launch Supplement program.

Further funding was received by TMU through graduate student and postdoctoral scholarships.
