Wrapping up a year of Ryerson recognitions
It has been a year to remember for numerous Ryerson researchers who were honoured for their work in 2021.
This past year many Ryerson University researchers and teams were recognized for their innovative work and celebrated for their contributions to society. A selection of these awards and accolades announced in 2021 are highlighted below.
Faculty of Arts
One of the Gairdner Foundation’s inaugural Early Career Investigator Awards went to sociology professor Sarah Elton for her research, which occurs at the intersection of health, ecosystems and food in the city.
Professors Dan Horner and Farzin Vejdani were selected as the 2021/2022 Ryerson Fellows at Massey College.
History professor Ian Mosby won the Best Article Prize from the Canadian Historical Review for his co-authored paper with University of Guelph professor Catherine Carstairs for “Colonial Extractions: Oral Health Care and Indigenous Peoples in Canada, 1945–79” (external link, opens in new window) .
Faculty of Community Services
Nursing professor Suzanne Fredericks was elected as a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (external link, opens in new window) .
The Canadian Academy of Nursing named professor Sepali Guruge as a Fellow (external link, opens in new window) .
School of Urban Planning professor Nina-Marie Lister received the prestigious Margolese National Design for Living Prize from the University of British Columbia’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.
Planning professor Shelagh McCartney was named to the College of Fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (external link, opens in new window) .
Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science
Architectural science professor Umberto Berardi was chosen for Canada’s Clean50 and Clean16 awards (external link, opens in new window) , which recognize leaders in sustainability.
Tom Duever, dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, was named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
Owais Khan, a professor in the Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering, received a Banting-Mitacs Discovery Award (external link, opens in new window) for his efforts to develop a computational model of blood flow to assist clinicians in the treatment of heart patients.
Mechanical and industrial engineering professor C. Ravi Ravindran was the recipient of Alpha Sigma Mu International Honorary Membership (external link, opens in new window) , the society's highest honour, in recognition of his distinguished service to the materials science and engineering profession.
Faculty of Science
Chemistry professor Stefania Impellizzeri was honoured with the 2021 PCCP Emerging Investigator Lectureship Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry. The award recognizes and supports early career researchers who have made outstanding contributions in their field.
The Royal Canadian Institute for Science’s William Edmond Logan Award was given to SciXchange, which is led by immunology professor Emily Agard, for its contributions to the public understanding of science.
Lincoln Alexander School of Law
Chile Eboe-Osuji, distinguished international jurist, received the prestigious Goler T. Butcher Medal, presented by the American Society of International Law, for his outstanding contributions to global human rights.
Donna E. Young, founding dean of the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, was named a Female Trailblazer of the Year (external link, opens in new window) by the Canadian Law Awards.
Ted Rogers School of Management
Cheri Bradish, director of Ryerson’s Future of Sport Lab and a professor of business management, was named one of North America’s Top Sport Tech Innovators by SportTechX.
Global management studies professor Ojelanki Ngwenyama received an Association for Information Systems Fellow Award (external link, opens in new window) in recognition of his distinguished career.
Samir Sinha, director of health policy research and co-chair of Ryerson’s National Institute on Ageing, was included on the Medical Post’s 2021 Power List (external link, opens in new window) for his work advocating for seniors and improvements to long-term care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Creative School
Dave Colangelo, professor of professional communication, was awarded the Anne Freidberg Innovative Scholar Award by the Society for Cinema and Media Studies.
Creative industries professor Cheryl Thompson was named to the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists for her work examining Black history and anti-Black racism in Canada.
