Supports for Neurodivergent Students
Neurodivergent students enrich TMU with diverse ways of thinking, processing, creating, and engaging. Many students who identify as neurodivergent face unique barriers within academic and campus environments. These can include sensory overload, executive-function challenges, masking fatigue, environmental stressors and obstacles to accessing accommodations or inclusive learning spaces.
The Centre for Student Development and Counselling is committed to providing neuroaffirming, accessible, and identity-responsive mental health support that recognizes the lived experiences of neurodivergent students.
Our Centre has developed dedicated pathways of support for neurodivergent students under the guidance of counsellors with training and lived experience in neurodiversity-affirming care. These pathways are designed to:
- Acknowledge the diverse ways neurodivergent students experience campus life.
- Reduce barriers to accessing mental-health and academic supports.
- Recognize the impact of masking, burnout, and cumulative stress on well-being.
- Promote acceptance, self-understanding, and authentic expression.
- Connect students with relevant campus accommodations and resources.
Neurodivergent students are welcome to request counselling support from a counsellor with training in neuroaffirming practice or with a shared lived experience/identity. Whenever possible, the CSDC will make every effort to prioritize equitable access and supportive matching. Students seeking neuroaffirming counselling support are invited to indicate this preference when contacting our front desk at csdc@torontomu.ca or calling 416-979-5195
