Text-to-Speech

Text-to-Speech
Text-to-speech (TTS) software reads digital text out loud, allowing students to listen to written content.
This accommodation supports access to written material in a format that may better align with a student’s learning needs. It can help reduce cognitive load, improve focus, and enhance comprehension during tests, exams, and coursework.
This accommodation may be appropriate for students who have disabilities that impact their ability to process, focus on, or retain information through traditional reading alone. Using text-to-speech (TTS) software allows students to access written content in an auditory format, which may support comprehension, concentration, and information retention.
TTS may also be helpful for reviewing written work, navigating dense readings, or accessing material in a way that better aligns with a student’s learning needs.
Common TTS options include:
- Natural Reader
- Kurzweil 3000
- Read & Write
- Apple’s built-in Speech tool
