The traditional image of nurses working at the bedside in hospitals is only one of the many opportunities nurses can fulfill today in our health care system, and beyond.

The scope of nursing practice also encompasses health promotion and the delivery of primary health care services to individuals, families and communities as well as other spheres of practice, such as government, health policy settings and research.

The career choices open to Registered Nurses today are unlimited. As a graduate of the Post Diploma Degree Program, you will find opportunities for a career:

  • In the community: in public health nursing, home care nursing, community health nursing and working in ambulatory clinics, health centres, primary health care facilities, street health organizations, occupational health settings and long term care settings.
  • In acute care and hospital settings: providing care to patients with acute and chronic conditions across a variety of units as well as in areas like rehabilitation and outpatient care.
  • In research: working in areas of research and implementation, as members of interprofessional and nursing research teams.
  • In global health settings: in addition to opportunities across Ontario, graduates of the Post Diploma Degree program can find opportunities as part of emergency, relief and community-building teams across the globe.

After graduation, you may also decide to expand your career choices and advancement opportunities even further by pursuing graduate studies in nursing.

The Nursing Post-Diploma program at Toronto Met provides you with the opportunity to build upon your education and experience to advance your career.

Diverse educational opportunities in the classroom and within a range of clinical practice settings support you to develop your own learning objectives and meet your unique professional and academic goals.

A dynamic blend of lecture discussion, hybrid online learning, small group learning, self-directed learning and supervised clinical practice will enable you to develop advanced skills and knowledge in a variety of clinical areas, including public health, acute care and community health.

The part-time program is designed to meet the needs of nursing professionals wishing to balance education with their career.

Our graduates go on to pursue nursing careers in the community, in hospital, and in a variety of exciting and dynamic health care settings.

Full-time Program

The full-time program consists of two years of full-time study.

The program is intense and demanding. Expect to be in class three days a week in year one and in the fall term of year two. In the winter term of year two, you will be in classes one day a week. In year two, you will also be in clinical placements in both terms.

For every hour in class, expect to spend one to three hours outside of class reading, reviewing and studying.

To set the conditions for your success in the program and to help achieve work-life balance, we often advise full-time students to consider working fewer hours.

Part-time Program

A flexible blend of in-class and online course delivery enables part-time students to balance professional development with their career.

Part-time students have up to seven years to complete the program, which is delivered through the Chang School of Continuing Education.

When you apply to the program, you will be required to meet a number of admission requirements based on your grades and prerequisite courses.

You'll need to meet certain deadlines when submitting your application online and may be required to submit supporting documents.

The Post-Diploma Degree Program curriculum will prepare you to play a critical role in treatment and recovery for patients.

Core courses on health assessment, epidemiology, ethics, and more, will strengthen your ability to practice consistent, safe and effective care.

Professionally related courses on health policy, health promotion, occupational health, and more, will engage you with the issues and opportunities you will encounter in your practice.

In your clinical placements, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a broad range of nursing practice settings — translating theory into practice and solidifying your technical, communication, care-giving and teamwork skills.

Opportunities to explore other disciplines, whether by pursuing a minor or taking elective courses, support you to expand your horizons.
