Policy 48(b): Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program Phases and Years of Study

1.  Phases and Years of Study:

The MD Program consists of three distinct phases over its four-year curriculum. Each phase varies in length. (See Appendix A).

1.1.  Phase 1: Foundations Phase – Begins in September Year 1 and lasts for 19 months. Phase 1 includes Year 1 and Year 2 of the curriculum. 

1.2.  Phase 2: Clinical and Community Immersion Phase – Following the end of Phase 1, in month 18 of the MD Program, Phase 2 continues until the end of month 34 (spanning 17 months). Phase 2 includes Year 3 of the curriculum.

1.3.  Phase 3: Professionalization Phase – Following the end of Phase 2, in month 35 of the MD Program, Phase 3 continues until the end of April in Year 4 (spanning 8 months). Phase 3 includes Year 4 of the curriculum.

2.  Enrolment Dates:

2.1.  Year 1 registration will be held in the month preceding Labour Day (August).

2.2. Year 2 registration will be held in the month preceding Labour Day (August).

2.3. Year 3 registration will be held in the week preceding the first week of April.

2.4. Year 4 registration will be held in the week preceding Labour Day.

3.  Course Duration and Start Dates:

3.1. Phase 1 / Year 1 courses begin on the Tuesday after Labour Day and end after a span of 10 months.

3.2. Phase 1 / Year 2 courses begin on the Tuesday after Labour Day and end after a span of 7 months.

3.3. Phase 2 / Year 3 courses begin in the first week of April and end in August, spanning 17 months.

3.4. Phase 3 / Year 4 courses begin on the Tuesday after Labour Day and end in April, spanning 8 months.

4.  Key Dates:

Students must follow the Key Dates published in the MD Academic Calendar for each Phase and Year.

5.  Study Week:

Phase 1/Year 1 will have a March Break (Study Week) as per the Key Dates, which will be updated annually. 

Phase 2 includes six weeks of vacation distributed over a span of 17 months.  

6.  Reporting of Final Grades:

The reporting of final grades will normally be done by the end of Year 1, Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3.
